The Core Design Principle
A QR code on a business card only works if the recipient scans it. The design job is to make scanning feel worth doing — not to cram a QR into a corner because it seems professional. Start with the destination and work backwards to the design. What to Link To (In Order of Effectiveness)
1. LinkedIn profile: The highest-performing destination for professional networking. Scan → connect instantly. Recipients see your full profile, recommendations, and experience. Better than a URL to a website nobody visits.2. Digital business card (Linktree, Blinq, HiHello, or custom page): A mobile-optimised page with all your contact info, links, and a "Save to Contacts" button. Better than a vCard QR because the page can be updated after printing.
3. Booking link (Calendly, Cal.com): If your business involves consultations or sales calls, a direct booking link turns a card handover into an appointment. The highest conversion destination.
4. Portfolio or case studies: For creatives, designers, or consultants — scan → immediate social proof. Works well at events where recipients evaluate vendors quickly.
5. Video introduction: A 60-second "who I am and what I do" video. Memorable and differentiating. Scanning opens the video immediately.
Avoid: linking to a generic homepage with a navigation menu. People have already met you — they need a specific next step, not a brochure.
Physical Design Rules
Size: Minimum 20 × 20 mm on a standard 85 × 55 mm card. Smaller than this and some phones struggle to scan, especially in dim lighting.Contrast: Dark modules on a light background (at minimum 3:1 contrast ratio). Avoid reversed-out white QR on a dark card — technically possible but scan failure rate increases significantly.
Quiet zone: Keep at least 4 module widths of clear space around the QR — do not crowd it to the edge of the card.
Error correction: Use Level M or H to accommodate slight print imperfections on thick or textured card stock.
Placement: Bottom right corner of the back of the card is convention. Top right also works. Never split a QR across a fold or perforation.
The Call-to-Action Label
A bare QR with no label has a ~30% lower scan rate than one with a one-line CTA. Include: - "Scan to connect on LinkedIn" - "Scan to book a call" - "Scan for my portfolio"The CTA sets expectation — people scan more readily when they know what they will get.
Testing Before Print Run
Before ordering 500 cards: 1. Print a test card on your printer at correct scale 2. Scan with iPhone Camera app and Android Camera app 3. Confirm the destination loads correctly on mobile 4. Check the landing page loads in under 3 secondsFor premium card stock (thick, textured, spot UV coating): test a physical proof from the printer. Spot UV over the QR area significantly reduces scan reliability — keep the QR area in matte finish.
