1. The Problem with Open Hints

If hints are available on demand and unlimited, teams use them freely and the challenge evaporates. A throttled QR system enforces a waiting period and a limit.

2. Scan-to-Request Flow

Teams scan the hint QR at any time. Instead of an immediate hint, the system sends a notification to the game master's screen. The game master approves, modifies, or declines.

3. Auto-Hint After Timeout

For smaller venues without a full-time game master, auto-deliver a hint if the request is not acted on within two minutes. The game master can still intervene if present.

4. Hint Tiers

Structure hints from a nudge ("check every surface") to a moderate hint ("look for a four-digit number near a light source") to a full solution. Teams pay a time penalty (30 seconds off the clock) per tier.

5. Post-Game Debrief

The hint log shows which puzzles needed the most help. Use this to improve puzzle design and brief teams on the puzzles they missed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a hint QR give the full solution?

Yes as a last resort, but apply a time penalty to keep it meaningful. Most teams prefer not to use it.

How do I prevent teams from scanning the hint QR repeatedly?

Rate-limit requests per session by IP or session token. Show the remaining hint allowance on the scan page.
