1. What to Encode

Encode a short URL to a page with: pet name, description, your contact number, and a "finder" form. Avoid putting your home address in the code directly.

2. Tag Material

Stainless steel, aluminium, and silicone tags survive outdoor life. Engrave or UV-print the QR rather than using a sticker that peels. Minimum 2.5 × 2.5 cm for a readable symbol.

3. Privacy

Use a hosted profile page where the pet owner controls what is shown. If the URL stops working, the tag is useless. Self-host or use a service with a good uptime track record.

4. NFC and QR Together

Some pet tags include both an NFC chip and a QR code. The QR works for phones without NFC or when the chip is blocked by a metal surface.

5. Test Before Use

Scan the code before attaching to the collar. Confirm the page loads and the contact form works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I put my phone number directly in the QR?

A tel: URI works, but a web page gives you more control and lets you update your number without making a new tag.

What size should a pet tag QR be?

At least 2.5 cm to scan reliably. Smaller tags are difficult to scan in low light or with shaking hands.
