What is Data Matrix?

By CodexEngr, QR Systems Engineer · Last reviewed: 2026-10-19

A 2D square or rectangular matrix barcode standardized under ISO/IEC 16022, widely used in pharmaceutical, aerospace, and electronics manufacturing for ultra-small part marking.

Data Matrix is a two-dimensional matrix barcode defined by ISO/IEC 16022, and it represents a fundamentally different engineering trade-off from QR codes. While QR codes are optimized for consumer scanning via smartphone cameras, Data Matrix was designed from inception for high-precision industrial imaging — laser engraving on circuit boards, dot-peening on aerospace components, and pharmaceutical direct-part marking (DPM) on surgical instruments.

Physical Structure

A Data Matrix symbol consists of:

  1. Finder Pattern ("L" Shape): A solid dark line along two adjacent edges (bottom and left) that anchors the symbol's position and orientation. Unlike QR's three-corner finder patterns, Data Matrix uses this L-shaped border for its orientation reference.
  2. Alternating Timing Border: The remaining two edges (top and right) feature an alternating dark-light pattern that defines the symbol's size and module pitch.
  3. Data Region: The interior cells encode user data and Reed-Solomon error correction using the ECC 200 algorithm.

GS1 Data Matrix in Pharmaceuticals

The pharmaceutical industry uses GS1 DataMatrix — a specific implementation of Data Matrix with GS1 Application Identifier encoding — as the mandatory standard for unit-of-use drug labeling under:

  • US FDA 21 CFR Part 820 (Device Labeling)
  • EU Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) 2011/62/EU
  • WHO PQ Programme for Essential Medicines

GS1 DataMatrix on pharmaceutical packaging encodes the GTIN (01), expiration date (17), batch/lot number (10), and serial number (21) — enabling track-and-trace from manufacturing to patient administration.

Why Data Matrix Is Not a QR Code Replacement

For consumer-facing marketing applications, Data Matrix is not interchangeable with QR codes. Most native smartphone cameras (iOS Camera app, Google Lens) can decode Data Matrix but with lower reliability than QR codes, particularly in low-contrast environments or with small print sizes. Data Matrix lacks QR's consumer recognition — the majority of end users encountering a Data Matrix symbol on consumer packaging do not know to scan it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a standard smartphone camera scan Data Matrix codes?

Both iOS (since iOS 15 with System Camera) and Android (Google Lens) can decode ECC 200 Data Matrix codes. However, reliability is lower than with QR codes for small symbols or low-contrast print — specialized industrial barcode scanner apps provide more robust decoding.

Why do pharmaceutical packages use Data Matrix instead of QR codes?

Data Matrix was chosen for pharmaceutical DPM (Direct Part Marking) because it can be physically engraved or laser-etched onto glass vials, plastic ampoules, and metal surgical instruments at very small sizes (down to 1mm) that remain decodable by industrial cameras — smaller than practical QR code minimum sizes.

What does ECC 200 mean in Data Matrix?

The Reed-Solomon error correction scheme used by all modern Data Matrix symbols. ECC 200 replaced the older ECC 000–140 schemes and is the only version you should generate today; every current reader expects it.
