QR Scanner Camera Permission Denied? How to Fix It (Any Device)

By Codexengr, QR Systems Engineer · Last reviewed

Fixing QR Scanner Camera Permission Problems

A black viewfinder, a frozen preview, or a "camera unavailable" message almost always means one thing: the scanner has no camera permission. This is a settings issue, not a broken scanner — and the fix takes under a minute.

For app scanners (any phone)

  1. Open Settings → Apps (or Application Manager).
  2. Find the scanner or camera app in the list.
  3. Tap Permissions.
  4. Set Camera to Allow.
  5. Fully close and reopen the scanner app.

The most common trap is tapping "Don't ask again" (or its equivalent) on the first prompt. After that, the app never asks again — only this manual Settings trip restores access.

For web-based scanners

  1. Load the scanner page (it must be HTTPS — browsers block camera access on plain HTTP entirely).
  2. When the browser asks for camera access, choose Allow.
  3. If you previously denied it, click the camera or lock icon in the address bar and change the site permission to Allow, then reload.

Check both levels: the browser needs OS-level camera permission too. If the browser itself is denied the camera in system Settings, no website can use it.

Verify the camera works at all

If permissions look correct but the viewfinder is still black, test the camera in another app (the system camera, a video call). If nothing shows video anywhere, the issue is hardware or a system-level restriction — not the scanner.

Managed devices

Work and school devices may enforce policies that disable the camera for some or all apps. No settings change on your side overrides an administrator policy. Ask IT to allow camera access for the scanner, or scan with a personal device.

Permission hygiene

Grant camera access only to scanners you trust, and only while using them — both Android and iOS let you choose "only while using the app." A QR scanner has no legitimate need for contacts, location, or microphone access; deny anything beyond the camera.

Where the scanner lives on this device

Built-in scanner: Any built-in scanner.

How to reach it: Open the system Settings → Apps → find the scanner/camera app → Permissions → enable Camera. For web scanners, allow camera access in the browser’s site-permission prompt and use an HTTPS page.

Common failure modes and fixes

Scanner shows a black viewfinder

Why it happens: The app has no camera permission, so the OS gives it no video feed.

Fix: Open Settings → Apps → the scanner app → Permissions → Camera → Allow. Restart the app after granting.

Permission was denied and the prompt never reappears

Why it happens: Choosing "Don’t ask again" (or the equivalent) permanently denies until you change it in Settings.

Fix: Go to Settings → Apps → the app → Permissions and switch Camera to Allow manually. The in-app prompt will not return on its own.

Web scanner says camera unavailable in the browser

Why it happens: The site was denied camera access, or the page is not HTTPS.

Fix: Click the camera/lock icon in the address bar and set camera to Allow. Browsers require HTTPS for camera access — HTTP pages are blocked entirely.

Work or school device blocks the camera for all apps

Why it happens: A device-management policy disables camera use.

Fix: This is an administrator restriction, not a bug. Ask the IT administrator to allow the camera for the scanner, or use an unmanaged personal device.

What this guide covers in testing

  • Scanner apps denied camera permission
  • Web scanners with blocked site permissions
  • Managed devices with camera policies

Performance notes

Camera permission problems masquerade as scanner bugs: black viewfinders, frozen previews, and "camera unavailable" errors are permission issues far more often than hardware failures. The fix is always in the same place — the OS permission settings for the app or site in question. One permanent denial ("don’t ask again") is the classic trap: the prompt never returns, and only a manual trip to Settings restores access.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my QR scanner show a black screen?
It has no camera permission. Go to Settings → Apps → the scanner app → Permissions → Camera → Allow, then restart the app. A black viewfinder is a permission issue far more often than a hardware failure.
I denied camera access once and the app never asks again. How do I fix it?
Choosing "don’t ask again" permanently denies until you change it manually. Open Settings → Apps → the app → Permissions and switch Camera to Allow. The in-app prompt will not return on its own.
Why will a web QR scanner not access my camera?
Either the site was denied (fix it via the camera/lock icon in the address bar) or the page is not HTTPS — browsers block camera access on insecure pages entirely. Also confirm the browser itself has OS-level camera permission.
Can I scan QR codes if my work phone blocks the camera?
Not with that device’s camera — administrator policies override app settings. Ask IT to allow the scanner, or use a personal unmanaged device for scanning.
