How to Scan QR Codes on Huawei Phones (HarmonyOS / EMUI)

Scanning QR Codes on Huawei Phones
Huawei phones scan QR codes natively — no Google services needed for standard codes. You get two built-in paths: the Camera app overlay and a dedicated Scan tile in Control Center.
Method 1: Camera app overlay
- Open the Camera app in Photo mode.
- Point it at the QR code.
- An overlay appears with the decoded content and an action button.
- Tap the action to open the link or save the details.
Method 2: Control Center Scan tile
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Control Center.
- Tap the Scan tile.
- A dedicated scanner opens with its own viewfinder.
This is the fastest route for a one-off scan, and it works without opening the full Camera app. If the tile is missing, edit your Control Center layout and add it back.
Phones without Google services
On Huawei phones without Google Mobile Services, standard QR codes still scan and decode normally — URLs, Wi-Fi credentials, contacts, and plain text are all handled on-device. What changes is what happens after the decode: links that deep-link into Google-only apps or services may not resolve. For ordinary web links, open them in the Huawei Browser. For map coordinates, use the preinstalled maps app.
Payment QR codes
The system scanner decodes the payment payload but cannot complete a payment by itself. Install your banking or wallet app from the AppGallery and scan payment codes inside that app, where the transaction gets its proper security context.
Wi-Fi codes
A decoded Wi-Fi code usually triggers a join prompt. If your build only shows the raw text, read the network name and password from it and join manually in Settings → Wi-Fi.
General tips
Huawei cameras are strong in low light, which helps with evening scans, but the usual rules still apply: clean lens, steady hand, code reasonably large in the frame, and watch out for reflections on glossy prints. If one built-in path misses a code, try the other before installing anything new.
Where the scanner lives on this device
Built-in scanner: Camera app + Control Center Scan tile.
How to reach it: Open the Camera app and point at the code — an overlay offers the decoded action. For the fastest path, swipe down to open Control Center and tap the Scan tile, which opens a dedicated scanner.
Common failure modes and fixes
QR code links to a Google service and fails to open properly
Why it happens: Newer Huawei phones lack Google Mobile Services, so Google-specific deep links may not resolve.
Fix: Open the link in the Huawei Browser instead, which handles standard web URLs. For map links, use the preinstalled maps app with the coordinates.
Payment QR code is not recognized
Why it happens: Payment codes need the matching wallet or banking app installed; the system scanner only decodes the payload.
Fix: Install your bank or wallet app from the AppGallery and scan the payment code inside that app.
Scan tile is missing from Control Center
Why it happens: The tile was removed from the Control Center layout.
Fix: Edit the Control Center tiles and add the Scan tile back. The Camera app overlay remains available in the meantime.
Wi-Fi QR code decodes but shows raw text instead of a join prompt
Why it happens: The system parsed the code but did not trigger the network-join action.
Fix: Read the SSID and password from the decoded text and join manually in Settings → Wi-Fi.
What this guide covers in testing
- URL QR codes
- Wi-Fi QR codes
- vCard contact QR codes
- Plain-text QR codes
- AppGallery app-link codes
Performance notes
Huawei phones scan QR codes natively through the Camera overlay and the Control Center Scan tile — no Google services required for standard codes. URLs, contacts, Wi-Fi credentials, and plain text all decode on-device. The practical limitation is ecosystem, not scanning: codes that deep-link into Google-only services need a workaround, while standard web links open fine in the Huawei Browser.
Frequently asked questions
- Can Huawei phones scan QR codes without Google services?
- Yes. QR decoding is built into the Camera app and the Control Center Scan tile and works fully without Google services. Only links that deep-link into Google-only apps may need a workaround, such as opening them in the Huawei Browser.
- Where is the Scan tile in Control Center on Huawei?
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Control Center and look for the Scan tile. If it is missing, edit the Control Center layout and add it. The Camera app overlay scans codes regardless.
- How do I scan payment QR codes on Huawei?
- Install your banking or wallet app from the AppGallery and scan the payment code inside that app. The system scanner only decodes the payload; the payment itself needs the financial app.
- Why does a scanned link not open correctly on my Huawei phone?
- If the link deep-links into a Google-only service, it may fail without Google Mobile Services. Try opening it as a plain web link in the Huawei Browser, which handles standard URLs normally.
