How to Scan QR Codes on Samsung Galaxy Phones

Scanning QR Codes on Samsung Galaxy Phones

Samsung Galaxy phones ship with more than one way to scan a QR code, and knowing which to use saves time. The Camera app detects codes automatically, while the Quick Panel tile gives you a dedicated scanner without opening any app.

Method 1: Camera app auto-detection

  1. Open the Camera app and make sure you are in Photo mode.
  2. Point the camera at the QR code.
  3. A banner appears over the viewfinder with the decoded result.
  4. Tap the banner to open the link, join the network, or save the contact.

Detection runs continuously, so there is nothing to press before the banner shows up.

Method 2: Quick Panel QR Code Scanner

This is the fastest method for a one-off scan:

  1. Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to fully expand the Quick Panel.
  2. Tap the QR Code Scanner tile.
  3. Point the scanner at the code — it works even from the lock screen.

If the tile is missing, tap the edit (pencil) icon in the panel and drag the QR Code Scanner tile into the active area. Once added, it stays available for future scans.

Method 3: The vision feature in the Camera app

The Camera app may offer a vision mode that also reads QR codes. It works, but it tends to run product searches and web lookups on what it sees, which adds friction when you just want to open a link. If your scans keep landing in a product search instead of the URL, turn off the vision suggestions in Camera settings so the QR banner opens links directly.

Fixing the most common annoyance

The single most common Galaxy scanning complaint is the banner opening a shopping search instead of the link. This is the vision feature intercepting the result. Disable its suggestions in Camera → Settings and the banner goes back to opening URLs directly.

Scanning payment and Wi-Fi codes

Galaxy phones handle Wi-Fi QR codes by prompting to join the network, and payment QR codes are best scanned inside your banking or wallet app so the payment flow gets the security context it expects. For a plain URL or contact code, the Camera banner is all you need.

When the code will not scan

Run through the basics: clean the lens, improve the light, hold the phone 15 to 25 cm away, and make sure the code has a quiet zone — a clean margin around the pattern. Glossy surfaces and direct sunlight are the usual culprits when a code that scans on one phone fails on another.

Where the scanner lives on this device

Built-in scanner: Camera app (auto-detection) + Quick Panel QR tile.

How to reach it: Open the Camera app in Photo mode and point at the code — a banner appears automatically. For the fastest path, swipe down twice to open the Quick Panel and tap the QR Code Scanner tile; you may need to add the tile via the panel edit button first.

Common failure modes and fixes

Camera app opens a shopping or product search instead of the link

Why it happens: An assistant vision feature is intercepting the QR result and running a product search instead of handing you the URL.

Fix: Open Camera → Settings and look for vision or assistant suggestions, then turn them off. The QR banner will then open links directly.

QR Code Scanner tile is missing from the Quick Panel

Why it happens: The tile has not been added to the active panel.

Fix: Swipe down twice, tap the edit (pencil) icon, and drag the QR Code Scanner tile into the active area.

Banner appears but vanishes before you can tap it

Why it happens: The camera keeps re-scanning as you move, dismissing the result each time the code leaves the ideal frame.

Fix: Hold the phone still once the banner appears. Alternatively use the Quick Panel scanner, which keeps the result on screen longer.

Code scans but the Wi-Fi network does not connect

Why it happens: The phone decoded the credentials but the join action was dismissed, or the network uses settings the QR format cannot express.

Fix: Rescan and tap the join prompt promptly. If the network needs extra settings, note the SSID and password from the result and configure them manually in Wi-Fi settings.

What this guide covers in testing

  • URL QR codes
  • Wi-Fi QR codes
  • vCard contact QR codes
  • Payment QR codes
  • Plain-text QR codes

Performance notes

Samsung Galaxy phones detect QR codes continuously in the Camera Photo mode, so no scan button is needed. The Quick Panel tile opens a dedicated scanner even from the lock screen, which is the quickest path for one-off scans. Result banners generally stay visible long enough to tap even if you look away briefly. As with all phones, clean optics, good lighting, and a code that fills a reasonable part of the frame give the most reliable results.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add the QR scanner to the Quick Panel on Samsung?
Swipe down twice from the top of the screen, tap the edit (pencil) icon, then drag the QR Code Scanner tile into the active panel. After that, one swipe and one tap opens the scanner from anywhere, including the lock screen.
Why does my Galaxy open a shopping search when I scan a QR code?
A vision assistant feature in the Camera app is intercepting the QR result. Open Camera → Settings, find the vision or assistant suggestions option, and turn it off. Scans will then open the decoded link directly.
Can Samsung Galaxy scan QR codes from the lock screen?
Yes. The Quick Panel QR Code Scanner tile works from the lock screen, so you can scan a code and get the result without unlocking the phone first.
Do I need the Bixby or vision features enabled to scan QR codes?
No. Basic QR detection in the Camera app works independently. The vision features add product and text recognition on top, but they are optional for QR scanning and can be disabled if they get in the way.
